Contributing to Canadian Culture

I have been thinking a lot about Canadian Culture and the art movement that Tom Thomson and The Group of Seven started.

They wanted to capture the raw beauty of untouched nature. It is interesting that the land that they were painting on is the oldest land on earth.

In my opinion many of Thomson's paintings explored the idea of physical objects staying strong and unmovable against strong forces. The West Wind by Thomson is an example of this. Canadians are very much unmovable against forces against them.

They wanted to create a new and identifbly Canadian art movement that wasn't reliant on Europe for it stylistic endeavors.

Are we seeing this today? Yes. To take a modern example in music; Drake created the Toronto sound. It is distinct in it's sound. The Tragically Hip are another example where they wrote and created music about Canadian stories.

One of the reasons why I paint, and I decided this when I first started, is that I want to contribute in some way to Canadian culture through my art and writing.
